What television needs is good ideas and interesting characters to keep the audience watching.

It gets both in Gok's Fashion Fix on Channel 4.

Gok Wan, a celebrity stylist, taught us how to Look Good Naked in his hugely popular show and now he's been given free rein with the television equivalent of a fashion magazine.

There's something surprisingly appealing about this quirky- looking Leicestershire lad. He certainly looks the part with his sharp suits, nice shirts, constantly changing hairstyle and trademark glasses.

But he also comes across as a Really Nice Guy. How To Look Good Naked wasn't really about fashion, or diet and exercise. It was about teaching women (and men) to make the most of what they've got.

Maybe it's the fact that, as a teenager, Gok weighed 21stone that gives him an empathy with people struggling with their body Tiffany Earrings image.

But he certainly understands style and identifies with people. Which means they, in turn, identify with him.

It's a powerful commodity and few people have it.

Gok's Fashion Fix (and you really know you've arrived when you only need your Christian name in the programme title) is just like him - bubbly, interesting and clever.

The eight-part series opened last night and started as it means to go on with lots of fun and facts.

Fashion is of the moment, but Gok gave us some principles to live by and showed that style doesn't necessarily need substance.

He used the tricks of the trade to turn high street fashions into something suitable for the catwalk.

With Alexa Chung acting as his fashion assistant, he went out on the streets to find what real people are wearing.

What an innovative approach for a television show. And it was just one of a number of great kiss me quick ideas we'll see in the series.

Stars will talk about their favourite clothes - Geri Hallwell's gold pounds8.99 hotpants from River Island - and share their wardrobe secrets. Joan Collins, for example, has 500 pairs of shoes.

The team will be roadtesting everything from bras to how fast you can run in high heeled shoes. And there's even a section with a live studio audience.

Television needs more shows like this which have had a bit of thought and effort put into them. But more than that, it's fun!
