CALLOUS thieves robbed a young mother as she cradled her seriously injured daughter in her arms after a car accident.
As Elizabeth Colquhoun tended to 21- month- old Lauren after she was Brochures Printing hit by a car in a supermarket car park, two women ran off with the child's pram containing her mother's handbag.
Lauren suffered multiple fractures to her skull after she left her mother's side outside Asda in Irvine, Ayrshire, and ran into the path of a Vauxhall Corsa.
Police officers who attended the scene said they were 'disgusted' by the crime.
Ayrshire Chief Inspector Alan Lawrence said: 'This theft was extremely traumatic for the family of this young girl at a very difficult time.
'This is a terrible, callous act and we are keen for anyone with information to help us catch the culprits.' Mrs Colquhoun's bag contained credit cards and a three-figure sum of money.
The pram was later abandoned outside the supermarket but the bag has not been recovered.
Police are looking for two women, thought to be in their mid-twenties, who were spotted with the pram before it was left outside the store.
Last night a family friend of Mrs Colquhoun and her husband Bobby said: 'At the moment they are just trying to concentrate on getting Lauren better.
'They love that little girl dearly and Elizabeth tried for years to have children before Lauren was born.
' Lauren has been getting better slowly but we don't know whether there is any long-lasting damage.' Another friend said: ' They absolutely dote on Lauren. They used to think they would never have kids. She's so precious so they are going through absolute hell right now.' Mrs Colquhoun, 34, a hospital worker, and Mr Colquhoun, a council worker, live in the Castlepark area of Irvine.
They have kept a constant vigil at Lauren's bedside at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital where she is said to be making 'satisfactory progress'.
Silver SetWitnesses to the accident 11 days ago described how Mrs Colquhoun dropped her shopping bags in horror when she saw her daughter run into the road.
One said: 'The mum dropped her bags and chased after the wee one but it was too late by then.
'The driver of the car was going very slowly but he had no chance.' One Asda employee said: 'Mrs Colquhoun was in a state of shock. She was shaking like a leaf and I don't think she could believe what happened.
'Quite a few of the workers comforted her until the ambulance arrived - it was the least we could do.
'Lauren's father came into the
embroidered patches store the following day to thank everyone who had tried to help and we are just praying that she pulls through quickly.'
Asda general manager Brian Friel said: 'We are keen to make sure the thieves are caught and have passed on information to the investigating officers.'
Police are now studying closedcircuit television film taken by cameras at the store to see if the women involved can be identified.
